The problem

AI search is changing how customers find you. Most WordPress sites aren’t ready.

When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google’s AI Overview to recommend a product or service, it doesn’t scroll through search results. It cites sources it can read and trust. Most small business websites, right now, are invisible to those systems.

That’s not a reason to panic. It’s a reason to act, and it’s entirely fixable with the right technical groundwork. This is what we call GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation): the practice of making your site readable, trustworthy, and citable by AI systems.

AI crawlers like GPTBot and ClaudeBot (the bots ChatGPT and Claude use to read websites) are silently blocked on most sites by default
Without schema markup (the behind-the-scenes code labels AI uses to understand your business), AI systems can’t confidently cite your content
Most content isn’t structured as direct answers, which is exactly the format AI search needs to quote you
Slow or technically broken sites get skipped entirely by AI systems that prioritise clean, fast, trustworthy sources

“But I already have Yoast SEO installed…”

Yoast, Rank Math, and similar plugins are excellent tools, and they’re doing some of this work automatically. But a plugin installed with default settings is not the same as a properly configured one.

Most sites using Yoast still have unconfigured Organisation schema, no FAQPage markup on service pages, and security plugins that silently block GPTBot and ClaudeBot despite Yoast being active. The plugin adds the schema framework but can’t fill in your business details, restructure your content for AI extractability, or test your actual visibility in ChatGPT and Perplexity.

Plugin installed, details blank
Organisation schema added by Yoast but left unconfigured
Crawlers silently blocked
Security plugins override Yoast and block GPTBot
No FAQPage markup
Service pages missing the schema type AI cites most
Content not structured for AI
Plugins can’t rewrite your pages to lead with direct answers

Why Yellow Hippo

WordPress expertise. GEO knowledge. Plain English.

01
We actually fix things

Our clients come to us when something isn’t working right. They stay because after working together, it works. Not “mostly works”. Actually works.

02
Deep WordPress and WooCommerce experience

Subscription logic, custom pricing, complex product setups. We’ve built and maintained WooCommerce stores that would break most developers, and that technical depth carries directly into AI readiness work.

03
No jargon, no mystery

You’ll always know what we’re working on and why. We explain GEO, schema markup, and AI crawlers in plain English, flag issues before they become problems, and never hide behind technical complexity.

04
Specialists in AI search, not generalists who added it

AI search readiness isn’t a trend we’re chasing. GEO and AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) are core to how we work. We stay ahead of how ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI change their behaviour so you don’t have to.

Live demo

This is what an AI-ready WordPress site looks like in action.

The chat button in the corner is an AI chatbot trained on this site’s content. It handles questions, qualifies leads, and answers enquiries around the clock, without you needing to be there.

This is exactly what we build for clients as part of the AI Readiness Implementation: an assistant that knows your services, prices, and FAQs, and converts visitors who aren’t ready to fill in a form.

Yellow Hippo assistant
Online — ask me anything
Hi — I'm the Yellow Hippo assistant. Ask me about services, pricing, or whether your site might need an AI readiness review.
Is my WooCommerce site affected by AI search changes?
Almost certainly, yes. Most WooCommerce sites block AI crawlers by default and have no product schema — meaning ChatGPT and Perplexity can't cite you. It's fixable in a few hours of focused work. Want me to tell you about the audit?

Common questions

What is AI search, and does my site need to change?

What is AI search?
AI search refers to tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overview that generate direct answers to questions rather than showing a list of links. Instead of clicking through to your site, users get a synthesised answer, and the sources cited in that answer get the visibility. If your site isn’t set up correctly, AI systems won’t be able to read or cite it.
What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation)?
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimisation. It’s the practice of making your website readable, understandable, and citable by AI-powered search tools. Think of it as SEO, but for the new generation of AI search engines. Where traditional SEO focuses on Google rankings, GEO focuses on appearing in AI-generated answers in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overview.
How do I know if AI crawlers are blocked on my site?
The quickest way is to check your robots.txt file (just add /robots.txt to your domain). If you see rules blocking GPTBot, anthropic-ai, or PerplexityBot, your site is blocked. Many WordPress sites block these crawlers by default through security plugins. Our free AI Readiness Scorecard will flag this in under 2 minutes.
What is schema markup?
Schema markup is behind-the-scenes code (usually JSON-LD) that tells AI systems and search engines what your business does, who it serves, and what your content means. Without it, AI tools have to guess, and they often get it wrong or skip you entirely. Common types include Organisation schema, FAQ schema, and for WooCommerce stores, Product and Review schema.
How long does it take to see results from GEO work?
Technical fixes like unblocking AI crawlers can show results within weeks, as tools like ChatGPT re-crawl your site relatively quickly. Schema and content changes take a little longer as AI systems update their understanding. Most clients see measurable improvement in AI visibility within 4–8 weeks of implementation.
Do I need to rebuild my website to be AI-ready?
No. AI readiness work is almost always done on your existing site. We update your robots.txt, add schema markup, create an llms.txt file (a brief guide for AI tools), and restructure key pages, all without rebuilding anything. Most WordPress and WooCommerce sites can be fully AI-ready within 10–14 working days.
I already have Yoast SEO installed. Why am I not showing up in AI search?
This is one of the most common things we see on audits. Yoast is a solid plugin and it handles some of the technical groundwork, but “installed” is not the same as “configured and AI-ready.” Most sites using Yoast have unconfigured Organisation schema (the business details section is left blank), no FAQPage markup on service pages, and a security plugin that’s silently blocking GPTBot or ClaudeBot despite Yoast being active. On top of that, Yoast can’t restructure your content to lead with direct answers, create an llms.txt file, or test whether your site actually appears when someone asks ChatGPT about your services. That gap is exactly what we address.
